The quickest way to identify what’s on your gate is to measure the hinge leaf length and the roller wheel diameter. Rollers usually run 3 to 6 inches. • Roller wheels look flat-spotted or wobble. Once a roller stops turning and just slides, it grinds a flat side into the wheel. That flat spot then beats on the rail every time the gate cycles, and the whole frame starts to shake.
• Loud grinding or squealing when the gate moves. That’s metal on metal. The bearing inside the roller or the hinge pin has lost its grease and is chewing itself apart.
• Gate sits lower on the latch side. You can see it in the gap under the gate. The hinge pins are oval-shaped instead of round, and the two leaf holes don’t line up like they did.

A gate under tension is unforgiving, and a swinging panel with one hinge gone can pin you or worse.
