DoorKing Welding & Fabrication: The Tarzana Owner’s Guide

If your DoorKing gate has a cracked weld, a torn hinge mount, or a bent operator bracket, we can repair or fabricate the replacement and have it done right, usually the same day we look at it. Most DoorKing welding and fabrication jobs in Tarzana run between $280 and $650 installed depending on the extent of the damage and whether we’re repairing on-site or building a new steel member on the bench. The way you’ll know you need us is hard to miss: the gate starts dragging, the opener strains, or a hinge tears loose from the post with a sound you don’t want to hear twice.

Call (818) 514-7606

We are an independent gate shop, not a DoorKing dealer or factory rep. What that means for you is straight parts matching, honest pricing on the metalwork, and no one trying to sell you a whole new operator when the fix is a weld and a gusset plate. Hal Gatewood has been doing this work in Tarzana since 2001, and most of the DoorKing welding calls we get come from gates installed 12 to 18 years ago, when the factory steel was thinner and the original welds were never back-gouged. Tarzana’s dry heat doesn’t rust steel the way coastal air does, but the sun absolutely cooks powder coat off and lets the base metal star in a slow corrosion film you’ll see at every stress point.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing swings and slides share a lot of DNA, but the weld points that fail are not the same across the board. On the 6300 series and the older 9150/9210 swing operators, the classic failure is the crank arm attachment or the hinge weld at the post where the gate hangs. On slide gates, we see it in the chain/idler bracket and the drive rail support stanchions, especially on 16-foot and heavier panels. The DoorKing 1601 and 1602 barrier gates have their own weak spot: the pivot ears where the arm attaches to the motor casting, which crack when the arm gets hit repeatedly by impatient drivers.

Before you buy anything, check your operator’s data plate. That stamped tag will have the model and serial, and it is the fastest way for us to match the right bracket geometry and steel thickness. There are at least three different hinge offsets across DoorKing’s swing line, and a fabrication that measures close is still wrong if the offset is off by even 3/8 of an inch. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: DoorKing’s OEM welded brackets are not particularly special steel. We fabricate replacement pieces from A36 structural plate, often a full gauge thicker than the original stamping, and our done-right promise covers the weld, not just the part.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags at the latch side even after hinge adjustment. That sag usually lives in the hinge post, where the weld or the post itself has fatigued. Fix the panel without the post and you’ll fix it twice.
  • A cracking or popping sound when the gate starts to move. The weld is flexing before it lets go. In Tarzana’s clay soil, post movement starts this sound months before the visible crack shows up.
  • The operator bracket shows a hairline crack at a hard corner. Sharp outside corners concentrate stress. A proper bracket rebuild includes radiused corners or a gusset plate so we’re not reproducing the original design’s weak point.
  • Visible rust bleeding from a weld seam or bolt hole. That means the protective coating has opened and the steel underneath is oxidizing. In Tarzana’s heat, the coating goes first, but the base metal failure follows within a year or two.
  • The gate no longer closes flush, even though the operator limit switches are right. The panel or the post has moved, and the geometry will keep fighting every other adjustment until the metal is squared and re-welded.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here is what a DoorKing welding and fabrication job costs in Tarzana, with no surprise line items.

Job Type Installed Price What’s Included
On-site crack repair and reinforcement (single weld point) $280 - $380 Grind-out, weld, gusset if needed, prime and paint
Hinge post repair or replacement bracket fabrication $350 - $520 Steel bracket, hardware, re-hang and adjust gate
Full operator bracket set, fabricated and installed $420 - $650 Both brackets, all hardware, geometry correction

Every quote is written and handed to you before we strike an arc, and the price does not change at the door. The work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld cracks or the gate sags again, one call brings Hal back, no runaround. We do not charge a trip fee inside the county, and if you have a written estimate from anyone else, bring it in and we’ll give you a second opinion for free.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can check safely. Is the bracket cracked or just the paint? Does the gate rock on the hinge when you push it? Can you see a gap between the post and the bracket? Those are look-and-report steps, and they help us price the job over the phone. The welding itself is not a weekend task. This is structural steel on a moving gate that weighs several hundred pounds, and a bad weld under a gate that closes on its own can injure someone before you know it’s failed. Welding overhead or upside down on an installed gate is genuinely dangerous without the right gear and experience. We do this on-site, in your driveway, with the gate blocked and the operator pulled, so the repair matches the way the gate actually hangs.

If the gate still works but it is making that popping sound, call (818) 514-7606 before it drops. Most of the DoorKing welding calls we take in Tarzana are caught early enough that $300 fixes what would have been $1,400 in parts if it had gone all the way.
