Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Tarzana Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible gate hinges and rollers, and in Tarzana a typical hinge and roller replacement runs $185 to $390 installed depending on the weight of the gate and whether we’re doing one pair or all four corners. Most jobs take an hour or two once we’re on site, and we carry the common sizes on the truck so there’s no second trip. You’ll know it when these parts fail: the gate starts dragging on the strike side, the roller wheels chew themselves flat, or you can see daylight between the hinge leaf and the post where there didn’t use to be any.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear gates, like most residential slide and swing operators in Southern California, use a few standard hinge and roller configurations. The parts vary by gate construction more than by opener model. A Linear SL series slide operator mounted on a chain-drive gate rail is going to use V-groove rollers, while a Linear-swing setup typically rides on barrel hinges or adjustable leaf hinges. If the gate is a welded steel tube frame, you’re looking at bolt-through or weld-on hinges sized between 4 and 8 inches. The quickest way to identify what’s on your gate is to measure the hinge leaf length and the roller wheel diameter. Rollers usually run 3 to 6 inches. A 4-inch steel wheel is the workhorse in Tarzana, but heavier gates over 450 pounds should have 6-inch rollers or they’ll wear out on you inside three years.

We source OEM Linear parts when the original hardware is still in the catalog, but honestly, a good chunk of these hinge and roller components are made to industry standards. For most homeowners, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a reputable supplier is the better value and lasts just as long, sometimes longer. The exception is when a gate has a Linear-specific mounting bracket already welded in place. Then we stay with the Linear-spec part so we’re not cutting and re-welding a bracket that never needed replacing. That’s the kind of thing that separates a one-hour repair from a half-day project.

Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate drags or scrapes on the closing edge. The hinge side has sagged, usually because the top hinge pin is worn or the post has shifted. The gate didn’t grow; the hardware gave up.
  • Roller wheels look flat-spotted or wobble. Once a roller stops turning and just slides, it grinds a flat side into the wheel. That flat spot then beats on the rail every time the gate cycles, and the whole frame starts to shake.
  • Loud grinding or squealing when the gate moves. That’s metal on metal. The bearing inside the roller or the hinge pin has lost its grease and is chewing itself apart.
  • Gate sits lower on the latch side. You can see it in the gap under the gate. The hinge pins are oval-shaped instead of round, and the two leaf holes don’t line up like they did.
  • You can lift the gate an inch or more at the free end. Play in the hinge means the gate is rocking on its pins. If you can shake it, the Linear operator is working harder every cycle to push that slop around.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-leaf steel gate in Tarzana, you’re looking at $120 to $220 in parts for a full hinge and roller set, plus one to two hours of labor. Our installed price falls in the $185 to $390 range I mentioned above, and we tell you the number before anything gets touched. Weld-on work, reinforcement of a rotted post area, or grinding off rusted bolts all add time, but we explain that in the estimate, not after the fact. Every replacement includes cleaning and greasing the pivot points, checking the gate’s travel alignment, and a written price agreed before we start. Work carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise, same as every job we do.

We’re an independent shop. We’re not affiliated with Linear, but we stock Linear-compatible parts and service their openers alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and the rest. If your gate company from the past left you with mismatched rollers or a hinge that was shimmed with washers, we will tell you plainly and fix it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check your rollers and hinges without any special training. Look for flat spots on the wheels, see if the gate lifts at the latch end, and count how many hinge bolt heads are rusted or missing. That tells you what’s failing. What you should not do is unbolt a loaded hinge on a 400-pound gate thinking you’ll prop it long enough to swap the part. A gate under tension is unforgiving, and a swinging panel with one hinge gone can pin you or worse. Hinge and roller replacement is not high-tension in the way a torsion spring is, and it’s one of the safer gate repairs out there, but gravity doesn’t care how handy you are. If the gate weighs more than you can deadlift, let one of us do it. I’m Hal Gatewood, and my crew and I have been doing this in Tarzana since 2001. If you’re not sure whether it’s a ten-minute swap or a real project, call the shop at (818) 514-7606 and describe what you’re seeing. If it sounds simple, we’ll tell you how to handle it yourself and save the trip.
