BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Tarzana Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has built a lot of different operator lines over the years, and the replacement path depends on which one your gate wears. The most common units we see in Tarzana are the older Phobos, Deimos, Ares, and Icaro series for swing gates, plus the Rigel, Sub, and Botticelli lines for slide and underground work. The Phobos BT and Deimos BT are probably the two we replace most in residential driveways around here, partly because there are thousands of them installed in the Valley, and partly because they’re old enough now that the original motors are hitting end of life.

The compatibility gotcha with BFT is the control board. On many BFT swing operators, the motor itself is a fairly simple 24V DC unit, but it talks to a board that is programmed for a specific motor’s torque curve and limit-sensing method. Swap in a motor with slightly different RPM or current draw and the board may error out or lose its force settings. So the real question is not just “which motor fits the arm,” but “which motor and board pairing matches what BFT built for this unit.” We match both, and when your old board is still healthy we can sometimes reuse it; when it’s not, we price the pair so you don’t get a surprise second invoice.

OEM versus aftermarket is a real decision on BFT gear. We stock OEM BFT motors for the units where the board is unforgiving about aftermarket specs, and we carry quality aftermarket equivalents, typically from Italian suppliers who build to BFT’s original drawings, for the mechanical-action units where a direct-replacement armature and gear set is all that’s needed. We’ll tell you which one we’d put on our own gate and why, and we never upsell OEM just because the box has a nicer logo.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

• Humming with no movement. The motor’s getting power and the capacitor is trying to start it, but the armature or gear train is bound up. On BFT units with plastic reduction gears, this is the classic pre-strip warning. Don’t keep pressing the transmitter; every hum without motion is chewing gear teeth.
• Gate opens but stops mid-cycle or won’t close. The motor’s duty cycle has degraded, or an internal thermal cutout is tripping because the motor is pulling too many amps. In Tarzana heat this gets worse on west-facing gates that bake all afternoon; BFT motors with worn windings run hotter and cut out sooner.
• Grinding, clicking, or a metallic chatter from the operator housing. Reduction gears are stripping, or the output shaft bearing has play. BFT swing arms often use a worm-and-wheel arrangement, and once the bronze gear starts to wear, the arm can creak and snatch instead of moving smooth.
• Gate moves at half speed or needs a push to start. Classic weak-capacitor or worn-brush symptom on the 24V BFT models. Once a brushed motor’s commutator is scored, no capacitor will restore speed; the motor is done.
• Operator trips its breaker or blows a fuse repeatedly. Shorted windings or a failed rectifier inside the motor housing. This one can also damage the board, which is why we recommend replacing the pair when this specific failure shows up; if the board’s been hit once, it tends to fail again.

I’ll be straight with you: BFT motors are 24V DC in most residential units, and that’s not the dangerous part. What’s dangerous is the gate itself. A swing gate that starts moving while you’re leaning into the operator housing has torn fingers off. If you’re not comfortable safely locking out the gate’s power and mechanically immobilizing the leaf before you touch anything, don’t start. That part isn’t worth saving money on.

Here’s what you can safely check: Is the breaker on? Does the manual release move freely or is the gate itself bound up? Is the battery, if your BFT has one, swollen or crusted at the terminals? Those checks cost you nothing. But once the operator cover’s off and you’re looking at a motor with three wires and a capacitor that can hold a charge even after power’s cut, call us.
